RIVERLANDERS looking for free and “down-to-earth” support can now be connected through a simple chat with Skylight Mental Health.

Providing free one-on-one, or group support for those living in drought-affected regions, Skylight Mental Health is now providing its service to the Riverland, with locals able to get in contact to help ease stress, uncertainty, financial pressure, or feelings of isolation.

“The funding (from the State Government) allowed us to start offering the program since last August, and it will run until August this year,” Skylight Mental Health Riverland community mental health worker Cathy Smith said.

“So far we have received a great response from the community.

“While this was originally designed for farmers struggling with drought, the program has also been great for everyday community members needing support – the way I see it, everyone has been affected by drought, and there is a real trickle-down effect.”

With support available in person, over the phone, or online, Ms Smith said all conversations are private and help establish practical tools to manage the day-to-day challenges, and work to connect those seeking assistance with local services and supports.

“Skylight’s ethos is about working and walking alongside people and figuring out their strengths and what supports are best for them – all assistance is completely guided by who I am going out to see,” Ms Smith said.

“I think what is special about Skylight’s services is that it’s also a confidential conversation between two people – it allows people to just chat and talk without any pressure.”
