Country carers share why they open their homes to local children

ACROSS country South Australia, everyday people are stepping forward to support local children through foster care - and many have shared their stories in an ac.care six part video series, Why I Care.
The series highlights the voices of regional foster carers who understand the importance of stability, belonging and community connection for children growing up in the country.
Each video captures a different “why” - the personal reasons people choose to welcome children into their homes and lives.
Brooke, who appears in the series with her partner, Mark, says their decision came from a simple belief that every child deserves a safe, loving place to grow.
“We chose to become foster carers because we believe every child deserves to be loved, to have a safe environment, a place to call home,” she said.
“As carers, we want to nurture their wellbeing to support their confidence, their growth, and their sense of self.”
Jeremy, another country carer featured in the series, reflects on the long term impact a stable home can have.
“I believe that giving a child a chance to experience a wonderful, stable home life is an important key element to their future.”
Through Why I Care, we hope to spark conversations across regional communities – from farms and small towns to river communities – about the many ways people can support children in care. Long term care, short term care, emergency care and respite all play a vital role in keeping children connected to the places they know.
ac.care Out of Home Care executive manager Shalini McCarthy says the series shines a light on the compassion found in country communities.
“Every story in this series shows that ordinary people can create extraordinary change,” she said.
“We hope these voices inspire others to explore their own ‘why’ and consider becoming part of our foster care community.”
